It’s time to hit refresh and reconsider automated hand hygiene

We recently returned from the annual APIC conference, and sprinkled through conversations we had, we couldn’t help but notice a lingering theme shared with us by potential customers. Namely, their first experience with automated hand hygiene did not meet their expectations, and they are still getting over the hangover effect.

That is perhaps to be expected as automated hand hygiene is still an emerging technology – one that will likely become the standard of care but is still working through the growing pains.  Unfortunately, some users of automated hand hygiene systems become dissatisfied with them because the systems fail to deliver the promised value. Users lost confidence in the systems’ accuracy, data validity, and customer service. And many users have noticed how healthcare providers can easily game the system.

We understand. Facilities are cautious about putting time and effort into a new system that might not meet expectations or demonstrate results. But we believe automated hand hygiene systems deserve another chance.

In short, don’t let a negative experience with one vendor turn into a blanket ban on future opportunities. It’s important to find the right fit. Use lessons learned from that experience to identify a partner that aligns with your facility’s goals and mission. what went wrong and define what you need in a new automated hand hygiene system. Take the time to interview prospective companies. Ask the tough questions, seek transparency, and choose a partner that proves they’re invested in your long-term success.  The outstanding clinical, staff safety, and patient experience benefit is too strong to ignore!
