The Global Handwashing Partnership recently published an article featuring Ms. Maureen Banks, RN, DNP, MBA, NEA-BC, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Executive of the Spaulding Rehab Network. Maureen kicked off a highly successful hand hygiene project (as part of a larger infection control effort) which included implementing BioVigil. BioVigil was selected because it’s one of the only systems that “records hand hygiene opportunities and the performance of hand hygiene.”
After only six months, Spaulding saw a 75% drop in C.diff rates. As such, they are considering removing personal protective equipment in certain areas. The following key factors are noted for BioVigil’s success at Spaulding: thorough measurement, accountability and feedback, and leadership.

As staff were successful, they began to see the system as a way to validate their strong performance. Over time, Maureen says, “You knew that you were successful, and that motivated you to be able to be proud of your own success.” In addition to a source of pride, it also gave staff another way for their supervisors to provide positive feedback on their work.
Due to the success at Spaulding Cambridge, Maureen is planning how to scale BioVigil in other hospitals within the Spaulding network.
